Orientation Blog

My name is Emily Kirkland and I am currently in my third year of college studying health sciences. My career goal is to become a physician's assistant and obtain a master's degree in health sciences. I was recently a student at the University of South Florida, and after some extenuating circumstances, had to move back home to Panama City, Florida where I am continuing my education at Gulf Coast State College. After this semester I will again be attending the University of South Florida to complete my academic goals. 

One topic I am interested in in anthropology is medical anthropology. Since I am pursuing a career in medicine, this concept will aid in my overall understanding of both medicine and anthropology. I want to learn more of the foundations of medicine and its development overtime through different cultures and beliefs. My career study will focus more on biomedicine rather than holistic medicine or ethnomedicine, but I want to strengthen my over knowledge of all aspects of medical practices.

 Biological Anthropology  is one of  the main subsects of anthropology. It differs from other parts of anthropology by focusing on the past of humans, instead of current trends. It encompasses how humans evolved overtime, links to early primate species, and the archeology of discovered remains such as bones. In order to better understand present humans, it is important to first understand humans of the past. To be able to organize these found differing traits and characteristics, scientists created the naming system of taxonomy . Taxonomy is used to group things that have similar traits such as gene structure or behavior. Foundations of Anthropology

Anthropology is the study of humans across all facets of life including culture, religion, social aspects, and how these few examples intertwine with each other. Anthropology is vast and stretches on all aspects of what it means to be human. A key component is to disregard one's own personal biases to accurately portray a human behavior or normalcies.
